What is Gold Filled & Jewelry Care

What is 14k Gold Filled?

Gold filled is a solid layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base. US standards require the gold layer to consist of 1/20th (or 5%) of the jewelry’s total weight. Our  gold filled is made with 14k gold.

What is gold filled?

Because 14k gold filled is mechanically bonded to the base rather than plated, it can’t rub off, unlike gold plated jewelry and can handle more wear. It's tarnish resistant, waterproof, and hypoallergenic making it great for everyday wear.

Gold filled jewelry is perfect for everyday wear. It can handle the wear and tear of daily life, and it's affordable. With the right care, gold filled jewelry can last a lifetime!

How to Care for 14k Gold Filled Jewelry

14k gold filled jewelry is great for everyday wear. You can shower and even sleep in it without the gold rubbing or flaking off. Most of the time gold filled jewelry requires very little cleaning; however, with everyday wear, dirt and dust will accumulate on your jewelry. We have listed some tips to keep your jewelry clean and to prolong it's life.

Cleaning 14k gold filled jewelry:

  • Use mild soap and lukewarm water and wash your jewelry in the solution for 5 minutes.
  • Gently scrub your piece with a soft brush or with your fingers. Make sure to focus on the areas with the most build-up.
  • Rinse with water
  • Pat your piece dry with a soft cloth.
  • Repeat if needed.

Day-to-day care:

Gold filled is amazing for everyday wear, however avoiding certain things will help prolong its lifetime and shine. Here are some things to follow to prolong it's life:

  • Don't apply harsh chemicals directly on the jewelry (e.g. lotion, perfume, sunscreen).
  • Avoid chlorine pools and hot tubs, as the chlorine will damage the gold.
  • Proceed with caution when swimming in the ocean, as salt water can harm the gold.
  • When you are not wearing your gold filled jewelry, store it in a sealed jewelry bag.

If you do these a few times, don't worry! Your jewelry is very durable. However - if you follow these guidelines, your jewelry will last longer.
